Devices at the edge can produce massive amounts of data, and with the steady continued growth in the number of connected devices, that data is growing exponentially. In its latest report, IoT Analytics says the global number of connected IoT devices will grow 9%, to 12.3 billion active endpoints by the end of 2021.
The bigger news is that more than 2 billion of those devices are connected via cellular networks, thanks to the growing penetration of 5G. Many of those devices–think monitoring sensors, wearables, robots, and smart vehicles–are sending continuous streams of data. For organizations to thrive in an IoT- an 5G-centric world, new approaches to capturing and storing that data are essential.
Out with the old cloud, in with the new multi-cloud future
The traditional relational databases that many organizations rely on today simply can’t keep up with the tsunami of data that is coming. To meet the future head-on, the time to start preparing is now. It takes the right cloud strategy for your organization.
For example, a global organization might choose a multi-cloud approach that enables them to keep data confined to specific geographic regions to meet GDPR requirements or country-specific laws about the residence of data. In other instances, a hybrid cloud approach that places data wherever it’s used—on-premises, at the edge, or in the cloud—might be more appropriate. This approach offers the best of all worlds—the privacy and control of on-premises and the cost savings afforded by public cloud.
The right tools for a new era of data
If your organization is planning to make waves in the IoT and 5G world, you need to be sure that you’re ready to conquer the data overload that will be coming your way. An open source database, built from the ground up to handle massive data in hybrid and multi-cloud environments, is the place to start. Pair that with open source, highly scalable event streaming that can keep up with data generated by even the largest fleet of 5G IoT devices, and you’re well on your way to building a data architecture that can grow with your IoT fleet.
