DataStax Names VMware Partner of the Year

DataStax Accelerate 2019, our inaugural user conference, turned out to be an incredible event chock-full of invaluable networking and enlightening presentations about building modern applications in hybrid cloud. It also brought our first Partner of the Year Award, which went to VMware.

Why VMware?

DataStax Customers have used a combination of VMware tools and platforms for years. This partnership has enabled us to further the simplicity achieved on vSAN by working with VMware to bring their vSAN Host Affinity option to market. Host affinity provides the highest performance solution to simplify storage management for distributed systems while empowering IT to run at peak efficiency.

Last year, DataStax announced production support of DataStax Enterprise (DSE) on vSAN, and both companies immediately reaped the benefits of this partnership:

• Operational simplicity: Storage management is unified under a single stack, eliminating silos and saving costs.
• Increased deployment flexibility and choice: Customers can scale-out by adding nodes or scale-up by adding CPU, DRAM, and/or disk capacity. Day-zero support of the latest storage technologies allows organizations to non-disruptively add capabilities such as non-volatile memory express (NVMe) to a cluster.
• Enhanced agility: Customers can deploy DSE quickly from vSAN’s highly automated, policy-based management in production environments on a proven storage platform.

How DataStax and VMware are Growing Multi-Cloud Power

VMware and DataStax continued to work together on building a more powerful joint solution. Recent investments have provided innovative capabilities to organizations adopting this solution: multi-cloud capabilities and enterprise-grade availability.

VMware recently announced Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple, which enables VMware and DataStax customers to run VMware natively in Microsoft Azure environments, similar to how organizations leverage VMware in AWS environments with VMware Cloud on AWS. By adding Azure, VMware and DataStax customers can now run VMware natively in three of the top four public clouds: AWS, Azure, and IBM Cloud.

At Accelerate, VMware and DataStax announced additional operation-simplifying enhancements:

• Better consolidation ratios that allow multiple DSE nodes to be run on a single vSAN host, allowing more consistent operations and cost savings.
• Support of multiple availability options for DSE workloads, which further reduces data center complexity by allowing admins to use the same policy-based fault tolerance as non-cloud-native apps in the cluster; it also lets a host of other operations, such as lifecycle management, be consistent with other workloads in the cluster.

DataStax and VMware: Providing the Full Enterprise-Ready Solution

VMware and DataStax solutions, when combined, eliminate complexity and help organizations realize the benefits of these new technologies quickly and easily. VMware and DataStax delivers three key benefits to ease the adoption of new technologies: multi-cloud capabilities, enterprise-grade availability, and intrinsic security.

1. Multi-Cloud Capabilities

With DataStax and VMware, customers get multi-cloud ready platforms out of the box. VMware allows customers to have consistent infrastructure, processes, and tooling across clouds. VMware’s public cloud partners leverage VMware’s hyperconverged infrastructure—vSphere, vSAN, and vCenter—to provide a consistent experience across clouds.

DataStax and VMware customers get built-in high availability and failure protection across availability zones, regions, and clouds. DataStax has multi-cloud replication built in and is instantly scalable to any cloud at a global scale. Also, DataStax’s ability to scale linearly provides predictable performance and cost-efficiency at scale.

VMware enables dynamic, full-stack policy-based management to customize availability. Customers can define failures to tolerate and implement stretched clusters for high availability across sites and availability zones. vSphere Replication and VMware Site Recovery Manager allow organizations to build a lower-cost disaster recovery solution.

3. Intrinsic Security

Finally, DataStax and VMware solutions provide intrinsic security across clouds and through every infrastructure tier:

• VMware uses AppDefense—a proprietary, AI-driven approach to security—plus role-based access controls, support for TPM 2.0 and vTPM 2.0, and software-based encryption, to protect data in-flight and provide other key security measures at the compute layer.
• At the storage layer, VMware provides software-based encryption for data-at-rest.
• At the network layer, VMware NSX allows every virtual machine to have its own security policies and firewall.
