Backup Service in DSE OpsCenter 6.7—Data Protection At Scale

Backup Service in DSE OpsCenter 6.7—Data Protection At Scale

The DSE OpsCenter Backup Service provides the flexibility and peace of mind to create, schedule, and manage backups and restores across all registered DataStax Enterprise (DSE) clusters with different backup destinations. Based on your feedback, we have incorporated three key enhancements to the Backup Service in OpsCenter 6.7 that we’re excited to share with you.

1.   Accelerated Restores

When data must be restored in a critical situation, every second equates to lost revenue. Restoring data quickly is of utmost importance. Given that, we’re proud to announce that we have made optimizations to our restore process to increase performance significantly. Enabled by default, these optimizations resulted in restores performing 3 to 6x faster in our tests.

This feature works seamlessly with your current data. When you restore a backup to a cluster with a matching topology (i.e., the data ownership on the ring per node match the data ownership on the ring per node in the backup) OpsCenter intelligently evaluates your cluster’s topology and directly loads your data into DSE without streaming, resulting in less stress on your cluster as there is no need for additional compactions and other processes to run after a restore takes place.

Doing this significantly accelerates restore speeds, resulting in restore times that nearly equal data download times. With frequent backups, most restore situations leverage this new feature. Restoring to clusters with different topologies still works out of the box but has similar performance to previous versions of OpsCenter.

2. S3-Compatible Destinations

In addition to AWS S3, many object storage providers include support for the S3 API. Given the demand, we have added support for SAPIcompatible object storage destinations in the Backup Service. OpsCenter now supports backing up and restoring DSE data from any object storage that supports the S3 API.

When creating a backup, enter S3-compatible object store details and let the Backup Service handle the rest.

3. Azure Blob Storage Destinations

In addition to S3-compatible storage support, we went a step further and added the capability to use Azure Blob Storage as a backup destination. This addition expands on the DataStax commitment of avoiding vendor lock-in, promoting flexibility, and accelerating hybrid cloud deployments.

When creating a backup, enter Azure blob storage details and let the Backup Service handle the rest.

As always, we continue to focus on improving the quality and reliability of OpsCenter. We’re enthusiastic about these important new features in the Backup Service and can’t wait for you to try them out. The peace of mind of accelerated restores, the additional flexibility to store backup data in more destinations, and the other performance improvements and bug fixes make this upgrade a no-brainer.
